I haven’t liked a Google TVC since the Chrome ones back in the day. But you can’t go wrong with The Muppets and you can’t go wrong with the music. I like it when you don’t need copy or headlines to get your point across. Simple is best.
Love or hate Apple, their TV ads are a perfect reflection of the brand. Simple, funny, easy to understand, and emotional. I like this recent iPhone 4S ad about SIRI better than the two previous ones. Maybe it’s that Christmas spirit. The “Go easy on the cookies” part was great, perfect copywriting. In traditional iPhone 4S style, we don’t see the whole face, putting our entire attention on the phone – a genius idea. Is it just me or are the beep sounds, both the low and the high in tune with the background music?
I throughly enjoy this TV spot by agency RKCR/Y&R. Definitely took heavy influence from Discovery’s “Boom de yada” spots but the idea to use Sir David Attenbourgh (narrator for the hit series “Planet Earth”) to read “What a Wonderful World” is a really great idea. Nice job!
After watching “The Whistleblower” i had a sudden sinking feeling. It was the feeling of utter depression….the kind of feeling you get after you’ve raged uncontrollably against something or fought to your last breath for something…only to have lost. (It was a very similar feeling i had after i watched “The Inside Job“, another very important movie to watch.) This movie shows, unabashedly, the cruel and harsh reality of men at their worst. It shows it from the Polaroids of fully naked women to close ups of battered and bashed in faces. In fact a couple scenes were really difficult to watch. Of course the real underlying theme here, the biggest villain, one that is shared equally among men and women, from the female employee who wouldn’t get her a set of keys, to the female bar manager who told the other girls what time their shifts were…was fear and indifference. That for the most part not all people were bad, but that they “looked the other way” or knew about things but didn’t do anything were the real accomplices. That fear, real fear so palpable you can almost taste it can be a horrifying thing and can strangle the reason and logic right out of a person. It can make them revert to a basic animalistic nature only thinking of survival.
The movie itself is quite simple in its story. We follow a well intentioned but naive Nebraska police officer, Kathryn Bolkovac, as she goes to work as part of a private contracting peacekeeping group hired by the UN to work in Bosnia. Her effectiveness and experience as a police officer wins her the first successful case of domestic abuse but also gets her a promotion to head up the Gender Affairs office handling many such cases. However what was one case suddenly explodes into a huge conspiracy of human trafficking with even her own company, and the UN involved sending her reeling along a twisted and dark path. We find unlikely yet powerful allies in the Internal Affairs officer, Peter Ward, and Madeleine Reese and we think the good guys have won and triumphed over the evil.
But this is a true story, it’s not a fairy tale or a fantasy. The ending lines come – the almost obligatory “what happened after” fades in and out after the visuals have ended, leaving the most damning impression of all. That even though everything was revealed and the horrors made public, the culprits never got prosecuted or made to answer for their crimes, the big contractor continues to do their work and make billions of dollars…that the hero goes home but is shunned and banned from working internationally. And probably the most depressing thing of all is that despite everything else, human traffickers and the women that are the victims continues to flourish and thrive all over the world. I have to say, this really is a fucked up world we live in. People talk about reincarnation as if it’s a gift but i don’t know…it seems it could also be a curse as well. I’m fine with just this one life thank you very much.
This spot by DDB London is a bit risque for a clothing brand, but those Brits are always more daring than Americans. The point is straightforward and i like that they used a variety of body types (aka “normal people”). I’m a bit surprised they didn’t do a closer money shot of the girl at the end considering that was the dress but i guess it was more about the idea of the spot rather than trying to sell clothes – i like that. Production value is nothing special but good choice of music to use Morning Has Broken since it’s a tune almost everyone recognizes and adds to the feeling in the spot that the day is just beginning.
I dig this spot by W+K New York. The sepia tone of the film gives it a rich almost vintage look, the idea of making a ramp out of the basketball court to illustrate the height and grace of his jump. I also like that unlike most of these commercials it’s not about the dunk, it’s a defensive play that grabs the air. I’m missing the “Just Do It” at the end but this is the Jordan brand.
It’s 4am and i just finished the Steve Jobs biography. It only took me 4 hours but i wanted to make a quick post before i do a more in-depth review later on. In the final words of the Steve Jobs biography the author, Walter Isaacson, quotes a letter Steve himself wrote musing on several aspects of his life both personal and professional. Steve Jobs touches on the scale and size of companies and why large companies like Microsoft fail in making innovative products. I’ve quoted parts of the passages that are relevant here. As a fun little exercise i’ve replaced some of the nouns with advertising related terms and you will find how well what he says captures the sorry state of many ad agencies today in many parts of the world both developed and developing. In Korea iTunes has finally been opened up to games category, and a flood of games has hit the market. A lot of them are very good (although i think pricey). I found some real good hidden gems like the X-Men original stand up arcade game, as well as Final Fight. There’s also Mortal Kombat 3 (although i think 2 was the best version), and Megaman, oh and of course the Street Fighter series and Final Fantasy. They also have Sonic the Hedgehog. But there’s a few games that are missing that would be perfect for iOS. I think there’s a lot of money to be had for bringing back nostalgic games. Here’s a few i think should be there:
What does it take to be successful? Is it relationships with people / your network? Is it a healthy work / personal life? Is it money, reputation, ass kissing, good looks, ability, skills, or intelligence? While it can be argued that all of these alone or together contribute to becoming successful, in my mind the most important is courage. Courage to believe in yourself, courage to take risks, courage to fight, courage to admit you’re wrong, courage to fail, and courage to be successful.
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. – Steve Jobs

The lowest common denominator for a lack of a creative idea is to use sex. There are some that argue that the mantra “Sex Sells” is effective advertising, and in some cases for some products yeah it probably is. But considering this is not one of those products, this is just oh so bad. Is Ford targeting this ad towards horny women and homosexuals? Is it because they think the only people who buy Ford Focus is women and gay men? Why not create a sign surrounded by large neon, Vegas style arrows with flashing lights pointing at the sign or something? There’s so much you could do with this. I mean if you are a woman or a gay man wouldn’t you be looking at the guy and not the sign thereby totally defeating the purpose of the message? Yet another reason for having a Creative Director and not two Copywriters and an Art Director. Because then what you get is a nice piece of copy, decent art, and a horrible creative idea. I am continually amazed that agencies produce and clients pay for shit ads like this. Ogilvy & Ford: Call me.
